CATS (Certified Adult Training School) of White Plains New York, was founded in 2007 in order to meet the new licensing demands instituted by New York State. The original model was based on existing Home Inspection Schools; intensive, daytime classroom learning in the beginning of the course, followed by all the practice inspections at the end.
The students were unhappy. There was an exhaustive amount of information lumped at them in a short period of time, the day classes were very inconvenient for the currently employed population, and although they may have been prepped for the NYS exam they were ill equipped to succeed as actual home inspectors running their own businesses.
The brief flurry of practice inspections at the tail end of the courses left little time to apply the classroom learning, leaving graduates to find their way on their own. A new inspector entering into the market is marketing themselves as a trained expert and cannot afford to appear like a “first timer”.
To better meet the needs of our students we changed our model. In 2009, classes were held in the evenings. In order to introduce the information in a more meaningful and manageable format we expanded the courses to be taught over four months, combining the practice inspections to run concurrently with the class work.
The students had the convenience of classes that did not interfere with their day jobs. They were much better informed about the technical aspects of the job without having to “cram”. The weekly practice inspections allowed for discussions in class while new information was being applied.
Most importantly, our graduates are succeeding! It has been more than four years since we made these changes and our graduates’ success has been our success.
